Weston (Bath) Bowls Club have secured a great sponsorship deal with local firm Arthur Lawrence Wealth Management Ltd and I am pleased to tell you that they have donated team shirts so that we will look even more of a team on match days.

We have invited James and Joanne Lawrence to come up to the club today, Saturday, 22nd August, so that they can officially present the shirts and we would be very grateful if as many members as possible could be in attendance to show our appreciation for this most generous contribution. The presentation will be after the pairs league matches so should be about 5.00pm. If you are not playing on that day it would still be nice for you to attend if possible. Social members are, of course, invited to attend.

We would like to say how grateful we are to Arthur Lawrence Wealth Management for their support and hope this is the start of a long and beneficial arrangement and we would like to say a big thankyou to Mike Gill for seeing this venture through to a successful conclusion.

Green Maintenance

Following a visit by the county greens adviser, a plan of action has been agreed to try to bring the green back to its historical best. The greenkeeper, Dan, has already started by spiking the green; this will mean that the green will feel a bit more spongy.

Together with the work that Dan is doing, we have agreed to do some work ourselves. From the middle of October we will be having our usual Wednesday maintenance meetings which will include a gang of members close spiking the green at the rate of 1 rink per week so that over 6 weeks the whole green will be thoroughly spiked.

We plan to have the green open for play until the end of September and Alan Watts is planning on the pairs league to continue until then. The league has proved very successful and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. Thanks to Alan Watts and Alan Tarrant for the bar. If you are playing in the game you should have paid your subs, which will cover you for next year as well, so if you haven’t paid, please see our treasurer Phil Provis. If you would like to play, it’s not too late, just advise Alan Watts of your availability and he will include you.

Don’t forget we have a facebook page (link at the bottom of this page).

Pairs League

Well our first Saturday saw a marvellous turnout, 29 bowlers! Many thanks to Alan W for the great organisation. Also, thanks to Harry for volunteering to stand down and give us even numbers.

Congratulations to Clive Coventry & Jo Francis-Pope who are runaway leaders on plus 20 shots, ahead of a cluster of players on plus 5. Still there’s a long way to go, even for those currently on a minus figure.

Thanks to Alan Tarrant who did a great job running the bar, it’s difficult enough in normal times but really hard work with the current restrictions. To have another 15 turn up to watch was unexpected, it seemed Alan spent as much time behind the bar as he did on the green. Also thanks to Norbs who helped out on the bar during the second half of the game. Luckily most of the spectators went home as we finished or social distancing would have been difficult.

The feedback was good, with both winners and losers saying they enjoyed it. The scores (good and bad) will roll forward to next week and the league table will be put onto the website.

Just a reminder, names for Thursday’s game and also for the following Saturday need to be submitted to Alan W by 9pm on Wednesday.

Reopening the green

Following the committee meeting on Monday evening it has been decided that we plan to open the green on Monday 15th June. This will be dependent on the government guidelines not being altered detrimentally and there are several stringent rules which have to be adhered to.

There are some jobs which will have to be completed before the club can be considered ready for play on the green.
1. the pebbles have to be replaced in the ditches
2. the benches need putting out
3. the fence behind the flag pole needs erecting
4. the weeds around the green need removing!
5. Our greenkeeper Dan has some applications he needs to complete on the green and has informed me that he will need this time to complete
We will restart maintenance mornings on Wednesday 27th May from 9.30am and I would be soooo pleased to see as many members as can make it, many hands make light work and there are plenty of areas in the grounds to ensure we can carry out social distancing and get all these jobs done..

I shall send out further emails keeping you informed of progress and setting out the rules for use of the green in due course but if you have any queries, please contact me either by phone or email.

Kind regards,

Green update

Good Afternoon All,

Following the relaxation of the lockdown by the government I have had a few inquiries regarding members using the green. We have a virtual committee tomorrow evening and I will be able to update you following that meeting.

There is a fair bit of work to be done prior to bowling and we must have regard to the rules regarding social distancing and mixing with non household members and the guidelines from Bowls England.

Please be patient and I will let you know the way forward as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
